Jenny Badger Sultan received a bachelor's
degree in art from Pomona College and an
MFA in painting from Columbia University.
She has taught art at City College of San
Francisco since l974. As a painter, Sultan
works primarily with images from her dreams.
Places and landscapes from dreams become
settings for symbolic events in her paintings.
Sometimes these landscapes relate to actual
places that Sultan visited as a child, while
others prefigure experiences, such as a
trip to the Neolithic temples in Malta.
Some of her recent paintings come from drawings
of sacred spaces and of landscapes that
Sultan calls "habitations for my soul."
Henry David Sultan received his
M.A.in painting from San Francisco State
University in 1968, when he began his partnership
with wife Jenny Sultan. He has been an exhibiting
artist for more than 35 years, and a mural
painter since 1976. Sultan currently works
part-time at the Precita Eyes Mural Center.
His work is deeplyinfluenced by environments
that resonate for him on an emotional, spiritual,
sensual, and physical level. Of his art,
Sultan says, "I am trying to get beyond
the realistic rendering of a landscape and
to dig out my personal symbols the
expression of my soul."
