CIIS Alumna Wins 2001 Buddha-Krishnamurti Scholarship

Jennifer Bruce with Nicholas, a child in the DrawBridge program

Jennifer Bruce, '00, M.A., Integral Counseling Psychology, is the first American and the first woman awarded the Buddha-Krishnamurti Scholarship by the Krishnamurti Foundation, India, since it was first offered in 1996. Every two years, the Foundation grants a scholarship to an individual interested in conducting research into the connection between the teachings of the Buddha and those of J. Krishnamurti. Offered for a period of one to two years, the scholarship includes board and lodging at the Krishnamurti Educational Centre, Varanasai, U.P., India, as well as a stipend. The center is only seven kilometers from Sarnath, where Buddha preached his first sermon. Jennifer has been an avid student of Krishnamurti's teachings since 1992. A registered Marriage and Family Therapist intern, Jennifer has worked in the biotechnology field for the last eight years. Her decision to pursue an M.A. degree at CIIS came after several years of working as a research assistant in an organic chemistry lab while simultaneously pursuing her own spiritual development in therapy with Gary Sall, Ph.D. Jennifer also works with DrawBridge—An Arts Program for Homeless Children (created by Gloria Simoneaux, '98).

CIIS Co-Sponsors Spiritual Prison Reform Conference:
Prison Yoga and Meditation
December 6 - 8, 2001

by Stuart Sovatsky '89

Why and how do yoga and meditation work in helping prison inmates resolve their problems? How can the worldwide movement of prison reform be brought into more prisons? During a December 6-8 Spiritual Prison Reform Conference at the Institute of Noetic Sciences in Petaluma, California, ex-convicts, yoga and meditation teachers, and corrections officials from around the world--including Kiran Bedi, who inspired the making of the film Doing Vipassana, Doing Time, and Sadguru of the Isha Foundation Prison Project (India)--will address these questions and more. For more information, email Stuart Sovatsky at stuartcs@jps.net or call 510-232-8262.

Meet the Library Director

Lise M. Dyckman, director of the Laurance S. Rockefeller Library, came to CIIS from the St. Mary's Medical Center Library at a teaching hospital in San Francisco, where she enjoyed experiencing the immediate and very real effects of research on peoples' health and lives. She is happy, however, to return to an academic setting, where learning and research are top priority.

Lise previously worked in the libraries at New York University for five years, and at Bryn Mawr and Haverford College for three, where she taught courses and set up library instruction programs as well as working the reference desk. Prior to working as a librarian, she created museum exhibits on social history, the history of technology, and living in industrial cultures.

Lise says, "The range of areas of study at CIIS is fascinating. Also, I have the sense that I can be wholly myself here, and that's extremely important to me." Lise works with Aleli Stok, administrative assistant; Patricia Rojas, Susmita Das, and Darcy Riddell, circulation; Fawzia Campana, cataloguing and book processing; Robyn Barker, systems librarian; Eahr Joan, serials coordinator; Cindy Matison, cataloger; and Lee Olivier, reference coordinator.

Asked what some of her priorities in the library will be, Lise replied, "We are here to serve students and faculty. We always need to be asking, What kinds of services and resources do they need? How can we create a library that not only houses books but is a place where people encounter, question, and explore ideas, and where people engage each other? I see the library as a center for student and faculty life. I invite members of the community to drop in to my office to say hello."

The Library is open now through Friday, December 14, 2001 (except for those holidays when CIIS is closed) Monday-Friday, 10:00am - 7:00pm, and Saturday 11:00am - 7:00pm. Reference services will be available on some Saturdays (see schedule at the Reference Desk, email askref@ciis.edu, or call 415-575-6186 for details).

Citizen Circle Fosters Spiritual Activism
by David Nicol, Student in Philosophy, Cosmology, & Consciousness

Are you interested in integrating your spiritual practices and principles with your social and political concerns? If so, you may want to join our Citizen Circle, which meets at CIIS every second Thursday evening from 7:00-9:00pm. A citizen circle is an intimate group of people (no more than 12) who meet regularly to meditate, pray, dialogue, and take action together in the spirit of what Marianne Williamson has called "the New Activism." The circle is part of an international network of spiritual activists associated with the Global Renaissance Alliance, a grassroots spiritual/political organization founded by Marianne Williamson.

In addition to serving as a support group, some of our planned events this semester include participating in racial healing circles, world peace vigils, and supporting the bill that proposes a Department of Peace.

Our next meeting is on Thursday, November 22, in the faculty/staff lounge on the fourth floor from 7:00-9:00 pm. If you would like more information, please email me at d_nicol@hotmail.com, or call me at 510-525-9516.
