President Subbiondo
is Graduation Speaker at Yoga College On Saturday, December 1, President Joseph L. Subbiondo was the commencement speaker at the graduation ceremony at Bikram's Yoga College of India in Los Angeles. President Subbiondo indicated to the graduates that he sensed a special connection to the Yoga College because the founder of CIIS, Haridas Chaudhuri, and the founder of the College, Bikram Choudhury, were close friends. In fact, Dr. Chaudhuri spent the last weekend of his life visiting his friend, Bikram, and teaching a workshop at the College. President Subbiondo commended the graduates not only for their disciplined training in becoming certified yoga teachers, but also for the healing energy they will contribute to our society. Subbiondo told Inner Eye that that he and Bikram have begun conversations to reconnect the institutions.
Recent Graduate's
Research The birth in December of a baby girl to the Japanese Crown Princess Masako has made the dissertation of Susan Carter, Ph.D. '01, Women's Spirituality--"Amaterasu-o-mi-kami: An Exploration of the Japanese Sun Goddess from a Western Feminist Perspective" --particularly relevant. Susan, who drew from her dissertation at a November presentation at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Religion (AAR) in November, explains, "The baby princess is next in line to the throne after her father, the Crown Prince Naruhito. This is intensifying debate as to whether or not the law prohibiting females ascending to the throne will be reversed. Questions have arisen as to why there cannot be a female emperor when the preeminent deity of the Shinto religion, the Sun Goddess, is herself female. The coming months promise to be interesting and hopeful for feminists around the world." At the AAR conference, some of Susan's more controversial ideas--such as Amaterasu-o-mi-kami's possible prehistoric matristic cultural roots and her importance as a role model for Japanese feminists today--were confirmed and validated by colleagues in the audience. Student Alliance News On December 19, 2001, active Student Alliance member Riko Robinson and past member Marlo Kinderman met with President Joseph Subbiondo and Dean of Students Richard Buggs. They discussed how the Student Alliance might be restructured so that it can enhance the student experience and ensure a representative student government at CIIS even as semesters change and students come and go. Joe and Richard were receptive to Riko and Marlo's proposal that the administration play a role in creating, supervising, and maintaining student government. Riko and Marlo are preparing written proposals for student positions, student government, and an expanded role for the school Aesthetics Committee. Another meeting was scheduled for late January 2002 to further advance these developments. The community space behind the cafe is being revamped with carpeting, furniture, and other trimmings purchased by Student Life Officer Chen Bentov and several Somatics students. Chen is stepping down from her position, and Richard Buggs is accepting resumes of students interested in the position of student life officer. Why Religion Matters and Spiritual Authority
Two outstanding lecture series, The Huston Smith Series on Religion: Why Religion Matters and Spiritual Authority: Surrender, Submission, or Conscious Discipleship? present some of today's leading voices in the dialogue on the place of religion and spirituality in our personal lives and world community. The Spiritual Authority series (Monday evenings, March 25 - May 13) explores various approaches to the controversial topic of spirituality authority as revealed by the world's great mystical traditions. East-West Psychology faculty Mariana Caplan presents three day-long workshops (March 23, April 20, and May 11) with guest lecturers in the field to address central themes in greater depth. The program will request copies from the Educational Technology Department on your behalf. At the end of each semester, students may continue to post papers and to engage in dialogue until the next semester begins.
