At its May 21 commencement ceremony, CIIS awarded an honorary doctorate to Sandra R. Hernández, MD, a leading foundation director, AIDS activist, and public health authority. She is the chief executive officer of The San Francisco Foundation, one of the largest community foundations in the nation, whose mission is to mobilize resources and act as a catalyst for change to build strong communities, foster civic leadership, and promote philanthropy. Dr. Hernández is also currently an assistant clinical professor at UCSF School of Medicine and maintains an active clinical practice at San Francisco General Hospital in the AIDS clinic.
“Dr Hernández exemplifies the core values of CIIS in her extraordinary service and commitment to our San Francisco Bay Area community,” said CIIS President Joseph Subbiondo. “We are blessed to have her inspiration as we celebrate the mission of CIIS.”
Dr. Hernández serves on the boards of the Lucille Packard Children's Hospital, Corporation for Supportive Housing, National Alliance for Hispanic Health, and the California Managed Risk Medical Insurance Board, which is the governing body for California's Children's Health Insurance Program. She is also a trustee of the Western Asbestos Settlement Trust. Her prior affiliations include President Clinton's Advisory Commission on Consumer Protection and Quality in the Healthcare Industry, The Pew Commission on Environmental Health, American foundation for AIDS Research, Grantmakers in Health, The Institute of Medicine’s Committee on the Consequences of Uninsurance, and Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government Executive Session on Philanthropy, among many others.
Dr. Hernández is a graduate of Yale University, Tufts School of Medicine, and the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Prior to becoming CEO for the San Francisco Foundation, she served as the director of public health for the City and County of San Francisco. |
