Beth Grossman is a Bay Area artist who
integrates stories and history into her
artwork of painted images and text on everyday
objects. A common thread in her artwork
is recontextualized stories and interpretations
of history. She has shown her work in museums
nationally and has worked on interactive,
collaborative art projects at national monuments,
rivers, parks, and street sites in the United
States, China, and Russia. Our Mother
Mary Found recontextualizes the story
of Mary by asserting her Jewish origin as
part of her identity. This exhibit revisits
the story of the iconic "Madonna,"
and represents her as a woman who embodies
two faiths. Ten rustic wooden household
tools collected in Italy are gilded with
Jewish prayers that correspond to fragments
of Mary's life. Our Mother Mary Found conveys
the more pragmatic reality of a woman whose
daily labor as a mother and a faithful Jew
gave birth to a prophet and nurtured a revolutionary.
This exhibit was supported in part
by a gift from Helena Foster.
