Christopher Castle is a British-born visual artist, designer, and composer. His work is represented in many public collections, such as the British Museum, the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, and the Museum of Modern Art, Wales, as well as in private collections around the world. Through his art Castle explores the view of the Earth and the sense of place of many different cultures. He has traveled extensively, researching prehistoric art, architecture, and landscapes, and exploring how they manifest an ancient ecological wisdom. An important theme in Castle's work is the integration of musical composition with his visual art. He has collaborated as composer and designer on several projects with choreographer Kathryn Roszak. The works in this exhibition include paintings, drawings, and prints that express the ecstatic power of the earth—or li—the Chinese word for the subtle influences underlying the patterns of nature and of particular places. Li, being locally specific, is deeply linked to the cosmologies that have sprung from the human experience of the land. Many of Castle’s recent works, maps based on li, are also musical scores.
