Roslyn Banish studied photography under Aaron Siskind at the Institute of Design in Chicago, where she received a master's degree in photography. Author of four books, the San Francisco-based artist explores human issues by combining photographs and text. This exhibit is from a larger work, Focus on Living: Portraits of Americans with HIV and AIDS (University of Massachusetts Press, 2003), which features 40 Americans from across the country who are living with HIV/AIDS. Their stories highlight their day-to-day struggles and their fears and dreams as they respond to the challenges of their illness. Individually and collectively these stories offer a broad picture of HIV and AIDS in America.
