Explore North and South India
Join CIIS as we embark our annual journey to India. This exciting tour offers both the first-time and seasoned traveler a unique mix of options for adventure, relaxation, and reflection through meditation and yoga.
A week in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, home of ancient Dravidian art and culture and characterized by ornate and colorful Hindu temples. Awaken to a chorus of tropical songbirds in our idyllic guest house in Auroville, the universal township founded on the principles of Sri Aurobindo, with many opportunities to explore this garden city by motor scooter. A variety of daily classes are available, including yoga, meditation, integral philosophy, and the healing arts.
• Day trips to Pondicherry on the Bay of Bengal, and Chidambaram, site of the important living temple where Shiva is thought to have danced the cosmic dance that brought forth creation.
• Tours of Jaipur, the Rajasthani city of pink stone in northern India, and the nearby Amber Fort with its 400-year-old Temple of Kali.
• Morning visit to the legendary Taj Mahal in Agra. Afternoon stroll through the perfectly preserved deserted Moghul city of Fatehpur Sikri, an important archaeological site.
• Four days in Varanasi, one of the oldest and holiest of Hindu places, including a sunrise boat ride along the Ganges River. Afternoon trip to nearby Sarnath, where Buddha is believed to have delivered his first sermon after attaining nirvana.
• Experience the power and beauty of India in your own way, choosing group excursions or personal time.
The trip is led by Richard Buggs, Dean of Alumni at CIIS, and a frequent traveler to India. Richard’s caring sensitivity, attention to detail, and passion for India have made his previous trips an unforgettable experience for alumni and friends of CIIS. He will host an orientation meeting in early October where you’ll have the opportunity to meet other members of the travel group, learn more about the destinations, and share tips on packing and preparing for the journey.
