Welcome—
Spirit in the Arts at California Institute of Integral Studies celebrates creativity and affirms the power of art as an agent of change. Through art exhibits and events, Spirit in the Arts offers contemporary perspectives that integrate the spiritual, psychological, and aesthetic dimensions of life.
This year CIIS is celebrating its 40th anniversary in innovative academic and public programming. In alignment with the mission of the Institute to embody spirit, intellect, and wisdom in service to individuals, communities, and the Earth, Spirit in the Arts strives to expand the notion of the role of art in our times. Through inquiry into the function of art today, Spirit in the Arts brings a constantly evolving dialogue to the artists’ series. How can we be educated and inspired by the artist’s perspective on personal narrative and culture? How can art simultaneously test our belief systems as well as soothe our souls? This fall we have an impressive line-up of painters, collage artists, and photographers. From the work of Maxine Solomon, who brings us her abstract landscape paintings commenting on beauty and destruction of the elements, to the whimsical collage work of Ruth Terrill, the variety of art displayed is dynamic and provocative.
Notably, we are proud to announce a partnership with Visual Aid, a center for visual artists with life-threatening illnesses. We will showcase the gender-bending work of Michael Johnstone. Through a panel discussion and an artist’s reception, this event will open our fall line-up highlighting the ever-present issue of AIDS in society and the need for cultural memory. Please join us this fall season for these exceptional shows that communicate a unique visual story of past and present.
