The Manifest Dream exhibition is designed to showcase the aesthetics, cultural context, and history of Aboriginal women artists whose complex political and ancestral roots are reflected in bold yet mysterious images of “women’s dreaming.” Many of the artists in this exhibit have been internationally recognized with work in American, European, and Australian collections. Senior artists Minnie Pwerle and Lorna Naparururla Fencer were voted in the Top 50 collectible artists in 2005. Gabriella Possum, daughter of the famed artist Clifford Possum, was exhibited in the Women’s Museum of Art in Washington, DC, in 2006.
Virginia May, MFA, is an artist, curator, and collector of contemporary Australian Aboriginal art. She graduated from Queensland Institute of Technology with an MA in Visual Art in 2005. It was at this time that she began viewing and collecting contemporary Aboriginal art, an art movement that began in the 1970s with the introduction of modern acrylics and canvas to the remote outback areas of the Northern Territory, Australia. Upon returning to California, May has shown and lectured about this work in the Bay Area and is opening a gallery showcasing Australian Aboriginal art in Petaluma, California. She is currently a doctoral student at CIIS researching the transformative power of art.
