All Integrated Yoga Studies instructors
are graduate-level scholars and/or advanced yoga practitioners
with specialized training, many of whom are faculty at CIIS
teaching in a variety of departments. Some of our faculty
include:
Laura Cornell, M.A., is founder and director of
Peaceful Schools Project and a certified Kripalu Yoga teacher
and yoga teacher mentor. Author of The Moon Salutation:
Expression of the Feminine in Body, Psyche, Spirit, Laura
maintains a private practice in yoga therapy in Berkeley.
Michael Reed Gach, Ph.D., founder of the Acupressure
Institute in Berkeley, has used acupressure for more than
30 years. He is the originator of Acu-Yoga, combining yoga
with acupressure for self-treatment. Michael is the author
of Acupressure's Potent Points, Acupressure for Lovers,
and Acu-Yoga.
Steven Goodman, Ph.D., is co-director of the Asian
and Comparative Studies program at CIIS. He has taught and
lectured widely on Buddhism, meditation, and Western psychology
for the past 20 years. Steven is co-editor of Tibetan
Buddhism: Reason and Revelation.
Teri Katz, PT, M.S., a Rosen Method bodywork practitioner,
movement teacher, and senior training teacher, has taught
embodied anatomy and the Rosen Method in the United States
and abroad. She has 15 years' experience working with orthopedic
and neurological disorders. She works privately with clients
in Berkeley.
Robert McDermott, Ph.D., is president emeritus and
professor of philosophy and religion at CIIS. His writings
on Hinduism include: Radhakrishnan; The Spirit of Modern
India, with V. S. Naravane; The Essential Aurobindo;
Modern Hinduism: Gandhi and Aurobindo; an essay, "The
Bhagavad Gita: A Bibliographic Mapping" (in Philosophy
East and West); and Focus on Hinduism. He also
wrote and co-produced a film on Sri Aurobindo, The Avatar:
Concept and Example.
Richard Miller, Ph.D., has been an internationally
respected teacher and workshop leader, psychologist, and
writer for more than 30 years. Co-founder of the International
Association of Yoga Therapists, Richard has published numerous
articles related to the transformation and transcendence
of body, mind, and spirit.
Silvia Nakkach, M.A., MMT, is a pioneer in the field
of sound and transformation of consciousness, an award-winning
composer, a therapist, and a specialist in cross-cultural
music and sound therapy. She is the founding director of
the Vox Mundi Project (www.voxmundiproject.com), an international
school devoted to teaching and preserving indigenous musical
traditions.
Sophia Reinders, Ph.D., MFT, is a Jungian-oriented
psychotherapist in private practice in San Francisco and
Marin, a certified Iyengar Yoga teacher, and faculty at
CIIS. Sophia interweaves embodied awareness, movement, symbolic
processes, and creative expression, to reawaken and strengthen
the natural healing and balancing forces of psyche and body.
Jim Ryan, Ph.D., received his doctorate in South
Asian Literature (Tamil) from the University of California
at Berkeley. Jim's general interests are in the culture,
history, and philosophies of India. He is specifically interested
in various forms of Hindu tantra, particularly the traditions
of Kashmir Shaiva, Sri Aurobindo, and Haridas Chaudhuri.
Bahman Shirazi, Ph.D., is Director of Graduate Studies
and a faculty member at CIIS. Bahman's teaching interests
include integral psychology, psychology of Sufism, and cross-cultural
psychology. He is the author of the book chapter "Integral
Psychology: The Metaphors and Processes of Personal Integration."
Stuart Sovatsky, Ph.D., a faculty member in CIIS's
East-West Psychology program, is co-president of the Association
for Transpersonal Psychology. He is the author of Eros,
Consciousness, and Kundalini and Words from the Soul.
Anne Teich, Ph.D., is a Buddhist practitioner in
the Burmese Theravada Forest Tradition. She is editor of
Blooming in the Desert: Teachings of the Wildflower Monk;
a contributing author in Buddhist Women on the Edge;
and co-editor of Psycho-Ethical Aspects of Buddhism.
