PRANAYAMA: THE ART
OF YOGIC BREATHING

Rebecca Polack

The ancient wisdom of yoga speaks of the deep connection between respiration and the physical, mental, and spiritual well-being of the individual. Pranayama, the art of yogic breathing, enhances respiratory function, bringing relief and vitality to the physical body. It encourages mental clarityand alertness, preparing the mind for either decision-making or meditation. For the spiritual aspirant, pranayama provides a deep abiding sense of peace and wholeness, as well as greater energy and enthusiasm for life.

This experiential course explores key components of breathing and basic pranayama, including simple anatomy, the physiology of breathing, and the techniques discussed in yogic texts such as the Yoga Sutras and Hatha Pradipika. This series will aid the student in developing an awareness of the breathing mechanism in safely extending the breath and in building a strong personal practice. It is a great series for yoga teachers, as well.

Rebecca Polack studies pranayama with the Venerable Om Prakash Tiwari, a highly respected master of pranayama from India. She is a registered Yoga Alliance teacher and holds certifications in OM Yoga with Cyndi Lee; Prana Yoga with Dr. Jeffrey Migdow, M.D.; and Yoga for the Heart, cardiac training with Nischala Joy Devi. Teaching since 1997, Rebecca is the co-founder and former board chair of the New York Yoga Teachers Association. She has conducted asana, breathing, and stress management classes for individuals, groups, and corporate clients.
