| THE
BHAGAVAD GITA
Robert McDermott
This course explores the three yogas of the Bhagavad Gita:
knowledge, love, and action, as taught by the god Krishna
to the warrior Arjuna on the battlefield of a civil war. Krishna
revealed them to allay Arjuna's depression as the slaughter
of his kinsmen was to commence. These three yogas are at the
core of not only Hinduism, but of most subsequent spiritual
teachings.
This course provides an opportunity to understand the teachings
of Krishna and their relevance for a contemporary spiritual
worldview and spiritual practice. Using a very readable translation
of The Bhagavad Gita (Nilgiri Press, 1985), this course emphasizes
readings and class discussion. The final two sessions will
be devoted to a careful reading of six chapters of Sri Aurobindo's
Essays on the Gita.
We recommend that students take this course prior to taking
The Integral Yoga of
Sri Aurobindo, taught by Eric Weiss.
