F. David Peat

Peat was born and grew up in Liverpool where he attended Liverpool University. While his research interests took him into theoretical physics he has had a life-long interest in dialogues and collaboration with artists. After spending two years teaching at Queen’s University in Canada he joined the National Research Council of Canada where he carried out theoretical research on solid-state physics. During a sabbatical with Roger Penrose, he met the physicist, David Bohm, and stuck up a friendship, which led to many discussions and introduced Peat to look into the foundations of quantum theory. Their collaboration led to the book Science, Order and Creativity and they were working on a second book, The Order Between and Beyond, when Bohm died. Peat also began an interest in Jungian ideas and is the author of Synchronicity: The Bridge between Matter and Mind, which he is now planning to revise into a totally new edition.

After leaving the National Research Council of Canada, Peat focused on writing and is the author of some twenty books – details can be found on his website www.fdavidpeat.com. His most recent book, Pathways of Chance, combines autobiography and a series of “diversions” into physics, Jungian ideas, art, language and Native American worldviews. It can be ordered from www.paripublishing.com.

While living in North America Peat organized circles of Native American Elders and Western Scientists. His experiences with the Native American worldview are expressed in his book Blackfoot Physics.

In 1996 Peat moved to the small medieval hilltop village of Pari outside Siena. In 2000 he formed the Pari Center for New Learning which offers courses, runs conferences and has an active program of visitors – artists, writers and academics who would like to continue their work or simply find a congenial place to relax and talk.

Peat is a Fellow of the World Academy of Art and Science and a member of the Advisory Board to Albert Schweitzer College.
