The materialist worldview has dominated science and the academic world since the late nineteenth century and has a huge influence though technology, governments, economic development and the medical and educational systems, reinforced by many impressive achievements. Yet the sciences themselves are now bursting out of the dogmas of materialism, and consciousness studies are showing that minds are far more extensive than brains. In this workshop we will explore how to move beyond materialism in our own thinking; how to engage with materialists in constructive debates; how to help liberate our institutions from materialist assumptions; and how to engage in post-materialist activism. The paradigm shift to a holistic worldview provides many new opportunities for a new symbiosis of the sciences and spiritual traditions, for more ecological policies, for holistic medicine and healing, and for the arts. We will explore some of the many possibilities and find ways in which we ourselves can help promote the paradigm shift that is already under way.
