The true power of yoga lies not in the strength and vitality it gives the physical body, but rather in the profoundly positive ways it changes our entire human system by refining the mind, clearing negative emotions, creating positive behaviors, improving our relationships, and bringing forth profound spiritual experiences. These changes are demonstrated as we move about the world in our daily lives, interacting with colleagues, friends, and family; and responding to situations as they arise. In a very real and practical sense, this is why we practice, so that how we feel, think, and even behave will be increasingly authentic and responsive, and decreasingly reactive and habitual.
Patañjali's Yogasūtras, composed over 1700 years ago in India, is one of the most authoritative texts on the practice of yoga. Its concise presentation of how to bring yoga off the mat and into daily life is considered an "owner's manual" for life, and has guided the practice of countless generations of yogis. This ongoing series of classes will examine Patañjali's Yogasūtras sūtra by sūtra and word by word, emphasizing how to apply its messages in our daily lives. Along the way, we will explore foundational concepts of yoga as a topic, as a practice, and as a teaching to be embodied in each moment of each day.
Each class will include presentation and discussion, as well as instruction in chanting the Yogasūtras. Each series covers a different set of sūtras and is complete within itself. No prior experience is necessary. All levels are welcome. Participants are eligible for Yoga Alliance CEUs. If you've ever felt the sūtras were too esoteric, complicated, or difficult to understand, this is the practical, how-to class you've been waiting for.
This class is available as a combined course with Vedic Chant>>
