Writing and performing from your roots -from the deepest parts of your identity- is an act of courage, transgression and discovery. It's a first step toward coming out as an artist and making your life your work. Join Marc Bamuthi Joseph for an intimate conversation about the artistic process: how is biography relevant in both arts practice and curatorial practice? How can powerful performance change institutions from within? How do we fluently access the most urgent material of the self and transform it into performance? Participants will get to witness some of Marc's work and hear him deconstruct what went into creating it. The evening will include demonstration, lecture, and discussion.

Marc Bamuthi Joseph, originally from NYC, is an arts activist currently living in Oakland, California. He is a National Poetry Slam champion, Broadway veteran, featured artist on the past two seasons of Russell Simmons' Def Poetry on HBO and a recipient of 2002 and 2004 National Performance Network Creation commissions. He entered the world of literary performance after crossing the sands of "traditional" theater, most notably on Broadway in the Tony Award winning The Tap Dance Kid and Stand-Up Tragedy.
