Menstruation without Shame:
Creating Attitudinal Changes
Through Parent Education

by Anna Catherine Yang

Crouched marble statue of AphroditeAttitudes of shame and embarrassment surround the topic of menstruation in the United States. Anna examines our inherited beliefs and the forces which shaped them. She also looks to pre-history and to the significance of the color red in various ages and cultures in an effort to discover what is missing from contemporary knowledge. Anna created Puberty in the '90s: Beyond Biology 101, an educational curriculum to help parents change their attitudes and actions so they can empower their young daughters to enter this natural cycle with pride. The emphasis is on body changes and their cycles rather than sexuality. Included are menstrual anatomy, physiology, the correlation of menstrual cycles with cycles of the moon, creativity, and connection to spirit, rites of passage, and ideas of womanhood.
