School of Professional Psychology

Integrating Theory and Practice
The School of Professional Psychology at CIIS balances traditional clinical training with a concern for contemporary social, cultural, and spiritual issues. Courses of study integrate new and alternative approaches to psychological health while adhering to rigorous standards of scholarship, research, and practice.

Students undertake clinical training through practica and internships. Many train in one of the school's four counseling centers, or draw upon the rich opportunities for clinical experience in the San Francisco Bay Area. The School of Professional Psychology also supports a research laboratory for the study of biofeedback and states of consciousness, promoting the inter-disciplinary study of psychology, meditation, and alternative interventions.

Our Students
The School of Professional Psychology's integral education is further enhanced by the diversity of students it attracts. CIIS psychology students hail from all corners of the United States, as well as Asia, Europe, South America, Africa, and Australia. They are of many ethnicities; span several generations (ages range from the early 20s to the mid-60s); cross social classes and spiritual backgrounds; and represent a variety of academic and professional experiences. Together, the students in the School of Professional Psychology bring to the classroom a richness in ways of being in the world and offer perspectives that have been informed by a multiplicity of backgrounds.

Graduates of the School of Professional Psychology have a strong history of accomplishment in the field of psychotherapy, as well as in secondary and higher education, the performing arts, politics, cinematography, and health care and healing. Many pursue successful careers in the nonprofit and private sectors. Graduates have consistently scored at the top of their field in state licensing examinations, and have continued to expand the boundaries of their profession.

Wherever their professional paths may lead, graduates of the CIIS School of Professional Psychology share an integral vision—one that meaningfully orients them in the world, while nourishing their mind, body, and spirit.
