Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a background in Anthropology/Sociology?
While it is recommended, applicants whose background is in a different field are not necessarily precluded from admission to the program. Applicants should have taken at least 3 upper-division courses in the social sciences by the time of entry in the program.

Can I attend part-time?
Yes. However, to qualify for financial aid, you must take 6 units per semester. (The full-time, recommended course-load is 9 units per semester.)

I am interested in documentary film-making. Is there a way to gain experience, for credit, in this program?
While CIIS does not offer such classes, students can take courses at other institutions and transfer up to 6 units into the program. Final approval is granted by the department. Anthropology students have made successful and award winning documentaries in the past.

Can I conduct my research abroad?
The Anthropology Program has a rigorous curriculum in theoretical and applied research at the M.A. and Ph.D. levels. Students are guided to conduct research in their area of specialization be it locally, nationally or internationally.
