Admission to the Program

General Requirements
In addition to being interviewed, applicants for both the M.A. and Ph.D. programs must submit the following:

• Official academic transcripts
• Autobiographical statement
• Goal statement
• Two letters of recommendation
• Recent example of scholarly writing

Additional Requirements for the M.A. Program
Applicants to the master's program in Cultural Anthropology and Social Transformation (Emphasis in Gender, Ecology, and Society) do not need to have an undergraduate major in anthropology in order to apply. They should, however, have completed at least three upper-division social science courses. If this is lacking, students accepted into the program can usually take the additional courses concurrently with graduate courses.

Additional Requirements for the Ph.D. Program
Entry into the Ph.D. program in Social and Cultural Anthropology requires a master's degree in the social sciences or humanities. Students with a master's degree from another institution or another program at California Institute of Integral Studies are required to take from 13 to 18 additional units from the master's program in Cultural Anthropology and Social Transformation (Emphasis in Gender, Ecology, and Society). Students can complete supplemental coursework while enrolled in the Ph.D. program.
