I am fascinated by the different approaches of various non-Western systems, yet I understand the value of what biomedicine has to offer. I want to find a method to bridge that gap.

Integrative Health Studies is a two-year, nonclinical master’s degree program that responds to increasing public demand for services integrating complementary and alternative health modalities and conventional Western medicine. Thirty percent of medical schools now offer at least one course in integrative medicine, and major American teaching hospitals like Harvard, Columbia, Duke, and UCSF have all created integrative medical centers.
The Integrative Health Studies program at CIIS is one of the few programs that offers accredited, culturally sensitive education and training for individuals seeking nonclinical professional employment in the integrated health field. It provides a strong academic foundation for graduates to work as integrative health administrators, integrative guides and navigators, and integrative researchers, policy makers, and consultants. Our stimulating academic environment fosters rigorous scholarship within the framework of a supportive community of learners, scholars, and health practitioners.
This program explores Eastern, Western, and indigenous healing traditions in modern and historic settings. We examine and integrate methodologies drawn from diverse complementary, alternative, conventional, and traditional health systems. Faculty and guest lecturers provide insight into contemporary practices of traditional modalities and explore the controversies and challenges of the new health paradigm.
Integrative Health Studies incorporates multicultural and pluralistic perspectives that enable practitioners to provide appropriate, acceptable, accountable, and accessible health care to diverse populations from around the world. Students learn to develop, implement, manage, and deliver integrative health services to mainstream, marginalized, and underserved communities. They study with faculty who are experienced integrative health administrators, researchers, clinicians, and teachers in hospitals, community clinics, public health organizations, and research and educational facilities.
CIIS’s Integrative Health Studies program affirms and incorporates mind-body-spirit perspectives in its academic courses, embodied practica, and diverse internships. Cutting-edge contemporary discoveries in the natural sciences, quantum physics, and biology are integrated with modern and historic spiritual perspectives. Students integrate the physical, spiritual, cultural, emotional, political, and environmental dimensions of health in academic reports, field trips, research projects, case studies, and personal reflection papers.
The Integrative Health Studies master’s program accepts admissions for both the fall and spring semesters, and students may enroll as full or part-time participants. In deference to the needs of working students, parents, or health professionals, a majority of the program’s classes occur after 4pm or on weekends. The deadline for applications for spring 2006 has been extended.
“By exploring diverse healing modalities in use today and their underlying origins and philosophies, we begin to forge a definition of wholism and integration. By addressing the complexities inherent in the relationship among the spiritual, physical, emotional, political, environmental, and cultural aspects of health and wellness, we create a new vocabulary for the Integrated Health Sciences. This results in a whole systems healthcare approach that encompasses all aspects of being and focuses on the patient as the center of care.”
