Integral Counseling M.A. Program

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this program different from mainstream psychology programs?
There are two distinct ways that qualify the ICP program as "alternative". The first is the emphasis on an experiential model of learning. This means that instead of simply studying the material in the traditional manner of learning "about" objective theories and ideas, the program take’s the learning process a step further and applies these theories and ideas about healing and transformation to ourselves, thus learning in a direct manner how the healing and transformative processes take place within ourselves. The ICP program believes that this is the most effective way to learn how to gain the therapeutic skills that we aim to teach. The second distinctive aspect of the program is the inclusion and integration of a transpersonal/spiritual orientation towards psychotherapy and towards the work that we do together in the program.

What exactly is transpersonal psychology?
Transpersonal psychology integrates western psychology with the world's spiritual traditions. Sometimes called the Fourth force in psychology, after the First force of behaviorism, the Second force of psycho-analysis, and the Third force of humanistic-existential psychology, transpersonal psychology views spirituality as the foundation for psychological life and synthesizes the three previous movements in psychology within this larger spiritual context.

Are there any prerequisites for the Integral Counseling Psychology Program?
There are no academic prerequisites for the ICP program but volunteer experience (working for a crisis hotline, woman’s shelter, being a big brother etc.) as well as any direct experience with psychotherapy can help strengthen your application to the program.

How long is the program?
The program is three years with the first 2 years being coursework and the last year predominantly involving practical training in the field. It is suggested that the student attend full-time in both Fall and Spring semesters, with the option of taking the Summer semester off from studies.

Do people work while in this program, if so how much?
Students do find that they have enough time to work while holding a full load of classes. Generally students work 10-20 hours, possibly more but working full-time is not advised.

What if I want to get licensed in another state?
The licensing requirements vary from state to state but because the California licensing requirements are some of the most rigorous in the nation, students who leave California with a Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology to pursue licenses in other states find that they have very little if any additional course work to complete.
