Where do Expressive Arts Therapists practice?
EXA Therapists practice at any location where
you would find traditional psychotherapist
private practice, schools, clinics, hospitals,
etc. The training covers what traditional "talk
therapists" would need to learn and, in addition,
EXA training instills other non-verbal methods
of awareness, self -actualization, and analysis.
These non-verbal modalities include visual art
therapy (painting, sculpture, collage), dance/movement
therapy, and music therapy. As such, EXA therapists
can also work in specialty fields such as activity
therapy, or recreational therapy.
What are the prerequisites for the program?
Besides possessing an undergraduate degree, there
are no academic pre-requisites to the program.
Applicants should have a strong interest in both
psychotherapy and the arts, and that they are
open and willing to delve deeply into their own
inner emotional and psychological processes.
How long is the program?
The program is three years with the first 2 years
being coursework and the last year predominantly
involving practical training in the field. It
is suggested that the student attend full-time
in both Fall and Spring semesters, with the option
of taking the Summer semester off from studies.
Can I attend part time?
Students are not encouraged to go part-time because
many courses follow a set sequence and involve
a "cohort" or peer group experience.
Students can begin taking some of the more general
classes (i.e., the MCP classes) prior to "officially"
beginning their EXA program. This would allow
the student to take a lighter course load and
still attend those EXA classes that lend themselves
to the cohort experience. The student can also
lighten their course load by taking some MCP classes
in the Summer.
Can I apply to the EXA Program even though
I have not graduated from my undergraduate institution?
Yes, you can apply even if you are still working
on your BA but you will need to provide the Admissions
Office with your final transcript showing you
graduated before starting the program.
What if I want to get licensed in another
state?
The licensing requirements vary from state to
state, but because the California licensing requirements
are some of the most rigorous in the nation, students
who leave California with a Masters Degree in
Counseling Psychology to pursue licenses in other
states find that they have very little if any
additional course work to complete.
If I can not attend the CIIS informational
meetings or Open Houses, can I meet with someone
affiliated with the department and speak with
him/her at length?
Prospective students interested in visiting CIIS
can schedule an appointment with the EXA Admissions
Officer at 415.575.6152. During their visit, students
can discuss their academic interests and goals,
pick up program materials and financial aid information,
take a tour around the school, or sit in on classes.
