Admission to the Program

Application to the M.A., Ph.D., and Spiritual Counseling Certificate programs requires the following:

  • Autobiographical statement.
  • Goal statement.
  • Academic writing sample (e.g., an outstanding essay, article, or selection from a master's thesis).
  • Official transcripts.

Additional Requirements for Ph.D. Applicants:

  • Applicants to the Ph.D. program are required to submit two letters
of recommendation from individuals familiar with their work and their readiness for doctoral work.
  • Applicants must have a master's degree.
  • An interview.

For those who do not have a background in East-West Psychology or in a similar area, the school may require up to 15 units of courses drawn from the East-West Psychology M.A. core requirements and directed electives. The Admissions Committee determines equivalency for graduate courses on an individual basis.

Additional Requirements for M.A. Applicants:

Applicants to the M.A. program in East-West Psychology need not have an undergraduate major in psychology, but must demonstrate a strong interest in psychology and possess an interdisciplinary orientation. The Admissions Committee may require that students with an insufficient background in psychology take additional courses from the East-West Psychology program or from other CIIS departments in order to complete the master's degree.

Additional Requirements for Spiritual Counseling Certificate Applicants:

  • Applicants for the Spiritual Counseling Certificate are required to submit two letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with their counseling skills.
  • Applicants must be licensed health care professionals, in practicum on their way to licensure, or pastoral counselors. (Applicants who are not yet licensed but have training and experience in mental health or spiritual counseling will be considered on a case-by-case basis.)
  • An interview.

Spiritual Counseling Certificate applicants will fill out the normal “Application for Admissions” that M.A. and doctoral students fill out, checking the Spiritual Counseling Certificate category in the “Doctoral Programs” box. Students who are applying for the doctoral program and wish also to gain a Spiritual Counseling Certificate within the doctoral program will check both doctoral program and certificate program categories, and will need to submit the “Additional Requirements” listed for both.
