Greening CIIS

Greening CIISMission
The Greening CIIS Committee seeks to uphold the Institute ideals of “Advocates of Feminism and Sustainability” and “Supports Community” by its efforts to make CIIS an environmentally responsible institute of higher learning, and to provide educational and social events that encourage environmental awareness and more sustainable resource usage practices among staff, faculty, and students of the Institute.

The Greening CIIS Committee acknowledges that environmental citizenship is an ongoing process, and it is committed to growing a base of dedicated faculty, staff, and students to join in the effort to align CIIS with sustainable and equitable environmental
policy.

Biking to CIIS

Biking is an easy and efficient way to reach CIIS.
To plan a safe biking route to CIIS, use the downloadable SF Bicycle Coalition’s PDF map of San Francisco. www.sfbike.org/?maps

They also have resources and information about taking your bike on BART if you are crossing the Bay.

Visitors are welcome to use the sidewalk bike racks in front of the building. Students, faculty, and staff can use the secure bike parking area in the gated lot next to the Mission Street building. When you arrive at the building, please show your CIIS ID to the greeter inside the lobby for access to bike parking.

Resource Reduction

Facts:
  • As of November 2007, CIIS used between 7,000 and 8,000 pieces of paper per day.
  • Every day American businesses generate enough paper to circle the Earth 28 times.
  • Converting trees to paper takes water, energy, and chemicals leaving a BIG footprint.
  • 40% of office paper still ends up in landfills.

Conservation Tips:

  • Default your printing to double-sided.
  • Scan and send documents electronically instead of printing/copying
  • Bring your own reusable utensils, containers, napkins, and mugs for use at school.
  • Buy used: Try thrift stores/Craigslist before you go to IKEA for that shelf or table.
  • Don’t buy bottled water. Use a refillable bottle.
  • Carpool! But maintain your car if you do drive: A well-maintained car is 10% more efficient.
