Natya Yoga Therapy ~ Combining Movement, Music and Meditation with Conventional Psychotherapy (based on ashta anga principles of yoga)
This presentation describes Natya Yoga Therapy, an integrative healing methodology that combines movement, music and meditation with conventional psychotherapy. Natya refers to expressive dance, rhythmic movement, expressive hand gestures (mudra) and music, and draws from practices of classical Indian dance (Bharatha Natyam). Yoga refers to practices of postures, breathing exercises and mental concentration leading into meditation, drawn from the eight principles of yoga (ashta anga yoga). Cognitive, behavioral and transpersonal therapies work towards developing a yogic life outlook, building on values such as authentic living, intellectual curiosity, and acceptance of life events. This paper explores how conventional psychotherapies are enhanced by practice of natya yoga in strengthening the psyche.
