Dark Night: The Breakdown of the Mythology of Me with Jeannie Zandi

Few issues can be brought to psychotherapy that better straddle the worlds of spiritual teachings and psychology than the dark night of the soul. This experience heralds the breakdown of the mythology of "me" and thus initiates an intense, comprehensive and life-changing spiritual crisis like no other. Given that therapy is the most common place people reach for help in darkness, it is vital that psychotherapists have information about this unique passage in order to treat, refer or offer resources to those who experience this phenomenon. It is critical for our world for us to see and support the emergence of beings living from tender-hearted nobody-ness, the living of life from a selfless and heart-based ground.

In this intensive, Jeannie will share information about her experience of the dark night and that of working with those who are experiencing the dark aspects of a crumbling sense of self. Information will be shared about how to identify a dark night, what exactly is happening psychologically and spiritually, what is helpful and what is not during such an experience, the place for spiritual teachings, the characteristics of a useful guide during the process, and some basic guidelines for minimizing suffering. Experiential exercises will help to ground both therapists and those interested in the kind of destination-less presence and simplicity that allows a space of love and meeting of phenomena for any difficulty. Plenty of time for questions and exchange with Jeannie will be provided.

Jeannie Zandi, MA is the director of Living as Love, a nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring, teaching and supporting people to live from their essence as Love. A year before the birth of her daughter, Jeannie was plunged into a dark night of the soul that culminated in a shift into unitive consciousness. Jeannie is known for her fearless clarity, tender mercy toward humanness, and a juicy, poetic and often humorous style, and draws from Advaita Vedanta, Sufism, Christian mysticism and the ongoing revelation of fully engaged living. She resides in New Mexico and travels widely in the US and Canada, bringing a down-to-earth embodied teaching of living from emptiness and the unknown.
