Ecology, Sustainability, and Regenerative Practices with Saundra Wolfe

This course will cover the principles, ethics, and design methods of permaculture. These principles of sustainable, self-regulating systems will be used to assess some of our current institutions such as: corporations, industrial agriculture, economics, health care, education, and justice. Are these institutions aligned with sustainable principles and ethics? Are they meeting the needs they were intended to serve? New strategies (sustainable agriculture, restorative justice, localized economic systems) that are emerging as alternatives to these systems will be similarly assessed to determine if they will prove more ethical and sustainable.

A Needs, Functions, Product (NFP) analysis will be conducted on these institutions to determine how they can be better designed for more efficiency, sustainability, and self-management.
The objective is to give students the tools to effectively assess and redesign social systems to better meet the needs of those served. We will explore how better designed, more effective systems can be implemented to supplant or alter current systems that are failing.

Saundra Wolfe received an MA in psychology from Wake Forest University in 1987. She worked with a variety of clinics and treatment teams in Atlanta, where she specialized in developing patient education curricula, and teaching stress and pain management courses. She lived and served in an ashram for four years, pursuing her spiritual path before moving to California to work with Bay Area Nonviolent Communication. While there, Saundra completed a yearlong leadership training in nonviolent communication and served as a teaching assistant in a yearlong committed practitioner program. She has been teaching nonviolent communication to inmates in San Quentin since 2008.

She received a Permaculture Design Certificate in 2007, then developed and presented a permaculture design course in Berkeley. Most recently, she taught the principles and techniques of Permaculture design for an online course. Saundra also created a course on rainwater and greywater harvesting that will be available on DVD within the year. Her current project is developing an urban farming consulting business. Saundra is deeply motivated and inspired by the upwelling of creativity and energy around creating a more just, resilient, and sustainable civilization.
