What Does it Mean to Be You? Lessons from the Dagara with Malidoma Patrice Somé
What does it mean to be an individual? It is a common misconception that indigenous traditions try to discourage individuality within their communities, but in reality this could not be further from the truth. From a Dagara perspective, you are the only one who has a PhD in you. Do you know what that means-to be you? During this weekend with Malidoma Somé you will be invited to consider your own purpose, your reason for choosing to be embodied at this particular time and place. You will also be introduced to the Dagara cosmology, especially as it relates to questions of individual purpose and communal responsibility. This conversation goes to the very heart of what it means to be human, and is full of riches for the modern person looking to re-member why they came into this life. This is a rare opportunity to work with an initiated elder from West Africa who is as fluent in the Western culture and its intricacies as he is his own. This workshop will be assisted by Zayin Cabot, an initiated bokara, inspired and mentored by both Malidoma and the Dagara tradition.
Malidoma Patrice Somé, PhD, is from Burkina Faso, West Africa. In his native language, Malidoma means, "Be friends with the stranger." By way of bridging worlds, he has been initiated as an elder and has come to be seen as a gifted diviner by his Dagara community. He received an MA in world literature from the University of Ouagadougou; a DEA in political science from the Sorbonne, University of Paris; as well as an MA and a PhD in literature from Brandeis University. In the early 1990s he was professor of literature and French at the University of Michigan, and visiting professor at Stanford University. He has since turned his attention to bringing the wisdom of the Dagara people to the world through the written word and through his work with individuals and groups around the world. The author of Of Water and the Spirit, The Healing Wisdom of Africa Ritual, and Power, Healing, and Community, he divides his time between his home in Orlando, Florida, and various communities in the U.S., Europe, and Africa.
