THIS WORKSHOP HAS BEEN CANCELLED

We apologize for any inconvenience it may cause

This course will provide a framework and introduction to ecological justice as a state of balance between human communities and healthy ecosystems. We will explore how issues of social justice and inequity are linked to climate change. Participants will also be encouraged to develop a deeper knowledge of place through readings from local cultural healers, teachers, and ecological justice activists of color.

J. Phoenix Smith is a professional public health social worker, ecotherapist, Initiated Elder, and spiritual teacher in the Lucumi Afro-Cuban Spiritual Tradition, and a public presenter. For over 20 years she has worked on issues of equity and social justice for LGBT communities of color in the United States, currently serving as a program manager with the Alameda County Public Health Department. In 2010 she founded EcoSoul, a holistic consulting company that provides ecotherapy through mentorship, trainings, writing, and ceremonies designed to awaken, restore, and heal our connections to the natural world. She has presented on ecotherapy, social justice and healing for communities of color at Edgewood Center for Children and Families, the Black Women's Media Project, and the San Francisco Green Festival, and was selected to present at the 2014 Bioneers Festival. She recently had an article published in the Journal of Ecopsychology as well. www.ecosoulwisdom.org

Our understanding of the integral mission of the Institute is distinctive in several key aspects. First, we attempt to integrate worlds of academic and grassroots knowledge. We believe that universities and social sciences are, for the most part, isolated from new practices and new movements, as they keep insisting on concepts and theories that are not adequate to new realities of creation and resistance. On the other side of this gap, activists are in serious need of new theories: theoretical knowledge (s) that can assist them in reflecting analytically on their practices, methods, and strategies for social change. At a moment when education is more then ever in danger of becoming enclosed and commodified, we have an urgent responsibility to defend universities as autonomous and critical places of knowledge production.
