Aging and Longterm Care with Sarah Jolley

So much of how we understand aging reflects the Western consumer driven biases that views aging as something to be avoided. While advances in technology and healthcare have increased our longevity, isolation and changing roles have resulted in lives lived with less meaning or sense of purpose for many elders. This class will provide understanding of aging and mental health when adaptation in the brain goes awry. Included in our work will also be an overview of the ethics of caring and the issues of elder abuse. Within the changes in the brain that occur in aging, some skills are lost, some new ones created and others remain the same. How we relate to and are shaped by these changes is influenced by our relationships, experience and culture that provides a common ground of humanity that is biological, psychological and spiritual. Through didactic and experiential learning, participants will gain a richer understanding of the challenges and possibility involved in working with and becoming elders today.

Sarah Jolley, RN, MFT, has 35 years of experience in working with individuals, couples, and families within a variety of settings. She integrates her work as a geriatric case manager, hospice nurse, educator, somatic psychotherapist, and supervisor into her classes at CIIS.

Integral Counseling Psychology Master's Program

The Integral Counseling Psychology (ICP) program is one of five distinct master's in counseling psychology programs at CIIS. ICP was the first East-West, transpersonal psychology graduate program in the world. Transpersonal psychology is a framework in which Western schools of psychology are synthesized with the world's spiritual traditions. We view psychological healing and growth within the larger context of spiritual unfolding.
