Beyond Ecogrief and Ecoanxiety (Group Process I) with Mary Good

In this weekend seminar, students will discover the resilience available when earth grief and ecoanxiety is held in a process of conscious allowing. Participants will learn how to navigate through their own deep, and often frightening, feelings about our current ecological crisis, and emerge on the other side with strength, determination, and joy. After understanding this process from the inside out through gentle experiential exercises in a safe, compassionate container, students will then explore how to guide others in doing the same.

Topics include:
• Mindfulness practices, for everyday personal support, as well as crisis management with clients.
• Somatic processing techniques for contacting and safely releasing grief and anxiety held in the body.
• Psycho-education on working with trauma, and other complex emotional states, such as rage, overwhelm, and apathy.
• Basic concepts of group leadership, such as format, creating a safe container, the use of nonviolent communication, and conflict management.

Mary Good received an MA in Integral Counseling Psychology from California Institute of Integral Studies in 2008. After her initial training in Gestalt therapy at the Church Street Counseling Center, she began internship with Holos Institute, an ecopsychology counseling and education center where she currently sees clients. Her specialization includes outdoor therapy sessions, deep grief work, nature connection, and natural history education. Along with seeing clients, Mary also writes on the topic of applied ecopsychology and was recently published in The Journal of Ecopsychology. Prior to graduate school Mary worked for 10 years with children as a teacher in theater arts (including drama therapy) and environmental education. Mary is also an avid gardener, aspiring homesteader, and enthusiastic botanist who spends her free time collecting wild edibles with her daughter in the beautiful environment of Sonoma County.

Somatic Psychology Program

The Somatic Psychology concentration at California Institute of Integral Studies is one of three accredited academic programs in the United States that prepares students to use both conventional and body-oriented approaches to psychotherapy. Students participate in a vibrant academic community where learning includes both didactic and experiential practices leading to the ability to work with clients holistically and effectively. After completing the program and other Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) requirements for licensure, graduates are prepared to do counseling psychology in both private practice and agency settings.
