The Women of Burning Man: Fueling Creativity and Community with Harley Dubois and Rebecca Anders

Women hold pivotal roles in creating community around the world. Burning Man culture advances the role of women in creating community through art on the playa, during the annual event in Nevada and off the playa, through organizations such as the Flux Foundation, where volunteers learn skills such a welding while co-creating art projects. Please join Harley Dubois, co-founder of Burning Man, and Rebecca Anders, co-founder of Flux Foundation, for a conversation about female leadership as a catalyst for creative expression and community building.

Harley K. Dubois is a founding member of the Burning Man Board and the Black Rock Arts Foundation, where she chairs the grants committee and acts as the foundation's liaison with the Burning Man Project. She is fully engaged in program development and works closely with the executive director and other staff members in conducting day-to-day operations.

As the City Manager of Black Rock City (BRC), Harley oversees both the Playa Safety Council and Community Services departments, ensuring that the citizens of BRC are happy and safe, including ingress, life on playa, and egress. She originated theme camp placement, the Greeters, Playa Info, and Burning Man Information Radio, and has kindled the development of all other Community Service teams. Harley also created and maintains a comprehensive training and self-development program for the Burning Man staff, fostering the concepts of volunteerism and cross-departmental communication.

Rebecca Anders is a passionate sculptor and metal fabricator whose work focuses on engaging, large-scale public art. She and Jess Hobbs have been collaborating and scheming since the 1990's in arts groups such as Cellspace Arts Collective, the Flaming Lotus Girls, and now Flux Foundation. Rebecca received a BFA from Cornell University and since, resides and works in the San Francisco Bay Area. She lends her incredible skills as an artist, teacher, and inspiring creator to the Flux Foundation as she leads the building of monumental art that stops people in their tracks. Rebecca has taught metalworking with the Crucible in Oakland, and Cellspace in San Francisco; and creates unique metal fabrications professionally. When she isn't behind her welding hood, she's cultivating her beautiful garden in West Oakland.
