Map of the Spirit: Diagnosis and Treatment of the Spirit with Michael Cantwell

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause

Map of the Spirit presents a framework, developed by Dr. Cantwell, which describes human spiritual development and the process by which we construct and then live out our spiritual beliefs. According to Dr. Cantwell, all people, regardless of particular beliefs, pass through the same four stages of spiritual development-the Pre-awareness, Awareness, Commitment, and Union Stages. Blockages in this process give rise to Spiritual Stress, the spiritual roots of disease. Map of the Spirit introduces the concept of Spiritual Stress to explain how and how much spiritual issues influence our health.

The three-hour workshop (two sessions separated by a 15-minute break) allows for more in-depth exploration of Map of the Spirit's two main concepts and introduction of two other concepts: Personal Spiritual Preferences and Spiritual Typing. This longer format allows for greater interaction between Dr. Cantwell and participants, greater discussion of clinical examples from the practices of both Dr. Cantwell and participants, and presentation of Map of the Spirit's full Questionnaire (Questions 1 to 9).

After completion of the lecture and, to a much greater extent, after completion of the workshop, participants will understand how to:
1. Determine how much spirituality is affecting their (or their clients') health
2. Determine where they are in the course of their (or their clients') spiritual development (i.e., their current stage(s) of spiritual development),
3. Determine how to treat their (or their clients') spirits (i.e., how to choose and implement spiritual interventions tailored to address their (or their clients') particular spiritual challenges and decrease their Spiritual Stress).

Dr. Michael Cantwell is board-certified pediatrician who sees both children and adults in his holistic medicine practice at Rising Phoenix Integrative Medicine Center, in San Francisco. He is the recipient of the 2013 USA Best Book Award for Alternative Medicine and the 2014 Eric Hoffer First Horizon Award for his book, Map of the Spirit: Diagnosis and Treatment of the Spirit.
