Ritual, Death and Transformation: Lessons from Burning Man and the Zen Hospice Project with Rosalie Barnes and Roy Remer

Lecture participants will explore the role of temporal art and ritual in their own lives, Burning Man's tradition of the Temple, and Zen Hospice Project's spiritual practice of sitting with impermanence.

Zen Hospice Project began helping people in 1987, and continues to offer programs and trainings that blend spiritual practice with service to the dying. Burning Man is world-famous for its fire art, and offers an annual tradition of building and burning a temple that honors those lost in the previous year.

Rosalie Barnes, EdM, wrangles government relations and community affairs for Black Rock City, the company that produces the Burning Man event. Prior to moving to the West Coast, Rosalie was a teacher and earned two degrees from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She has been a caregiver volunteer with the Zen Hospice program since 2013.

Roy Remer is the Director of Volunteer Services at Zen Hospice Project in San Francisco. He has been a hospice caregiver since 1997. In addition to his hospice work, Roy is a nature-based rites of passage guide with Earthways. He is dedicated to supporting persons through all of life's major transitions.
