Susannah Bartlow

Founding director of the Gender and Sexuality Resource Center at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Susannah Bartlow is the founding director of the Gender and Sexuality Resource Center at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which hosts an email network of professionals doing LGBTQ-related work in higher education.  She teaches in Women's and Gender Studies and English and is currently at work on two writing projects-scholarship on white women's subjectivity in literature of cross-racial coalitions and a creative project (titled "Survival") about personal and institutional liberation from gendered and sexual violence.  Her work bridges higher education with social movement contexts so we can reach for justice beyond inclusion.  

Susannah was also the founding Director of the Women's Center and contributing faculty in the Department of Women's and Gender Studies at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.  She is a member of the Milwaukee International Women's Day Committee, the National Women's Studies Association and the Consortium of LGBT Higher Educational Resource Professionals.   She earned a bachelor's degree in English from Bryn Mawr College and a master of arts and a doctoral degree in English from University of Buffalo. 


Building at the Intersections: Exploring LGBTQ Identity and Jesuit Higher Education

This workshop is designed to engage individuals in dialogue about the intersection of sexual orientation and gender identity with issues of faith, religion and culture. Within these dialogues, the workshop will place a particular emphasis on these intersections as they relate to the ethos of Interculturalism and the principles of Catholic Social Teaching. This workshop will engage in a conversation about queer theory and LGBT student development practices vis-à-vis Catholic Social Teaching to explore how LGBT centers and departments are able exist and function at Catholic institutions of higher education. Participants will gain a greater knowledge of pertinent theory related to sexual and spiritual development, learn about best practices, and develop action plans that allow for further development of LGBT support systems and networks at religiously affiliated institutions.
