Willy Wilkinson, MPH, is an award-winning writer and public health consultant who has worked extensively with health service providers and educational institutions to develop culturally appropriate service approaches for LGBT populations. Nationally known for his expertise in transgender public health issues, Wilkinson also has extensive experience with communities of color, substance users, sex workers, youth, and people with disabilities. He earned a master's in Public Health in Community Health Education from UC Berkeley, and a BA in Women's Studies from UC Santa Cruz. Culturally Competent Approaches for Addressing Transgender Issues in Higher Education
This workshop will describe the breadth of terms, identities, and concepts associated with transgender communities, as well as the myriad socioeconomic, health, and legal issues that transgender people face. Participants will learn to utilize culturally appropriate language and behavior for addressing and working with transgender populations, and develop culturally competent organizational systems and service approaches for working with transgender individuals and families. Interactive, solutions-oriented, and fun, this workshop provides opportunities for learning and problem solving at all knowledge levels. This workshop is for educators, administrators, and students who want to incorporate transgender issues into the curriculum and create trans-inclusive educational settings.
