ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
The frame drum plays a role in many cultures. It requires an extensive array of hand techniques and rhythms. Unlike the tambourine, to which it is often compared, the frame drum has a wide variety of sizes, from quite large to particularly small, with or without jingles. Generally played with the fingers, its ringing tones create a powerful drone effect.

In this workshop we will learn how to play the North African tar drum using the three basic sounds of the drum and typical Arabic rhythms. This style of teaching uses a simple and fun way to approach group or community drumming. We will also explore "drum language," an ancient use of the voice that allows each student to remember and easily play new rhythms. Glen will demonstrate his unique style of drumming derived from South Indian, Central Asian, Arabic, and South Italian traditions.  No experience necessary; drums provided.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Glen Velez
, a four-time Grammy award recipient, has played a seminal role over the last twenty-five years by introducing modern audiences to the frame drum. He has taught extensively in university and workshop settings worldwide, investigating the healing properties of drumming and sound. As a master teacher, he has developed his own teaching approach called the Handance Method, which incorporates voice and body movement into the process of learning to play the frame drum. His most recent recording is Rhythms of the Chakras, Vol. 2. Please visit: www.glenvelez.com or www.myspace.com/glenvelez
