ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
The class will focus on the wisdom and courage (as expressed boldly in their songs) of noble men and women, held in bondage during slavery. These men and women suffered unspeakable cruelties yet, through song and faith, they maintained the belief that all human beings have an equal right to freedom and dignity. These songs-African American spirituals-still show timeless wisdom and vision. We will explore how these songs have been used throughout the 20th and 21st centuries to carry a strong message in times of struggle. In labor movements, the civil rights movement, the free speech movement, and Tiananmen Square, these songs have inspired millions to keep pushing forward. They continue to inspire us now, as we work toward deconstructing the prejudices that impede our progress toward a society in which all people have the freedom to live without fear of oppression.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Native San Franciscan Linda Tillery is a Grammy-nominated vocalist, percussionist, producer, and cultural historian. She has dedicated the last eighteen years to the research, teaching, and performance of African American vernacular music. Tillery's art reflects her eclectic interests and her restless inquiries into music of the African diaspora. A singer and percussionist in multiple bands, Tillery was a founding member of Bobby McFerrin's Voicestra, and founded the Cultural Heritage Choir to preserve and share the rich musical traditions of African American roots music.

The combined course is available for one unit of academic credit to CIIS students.
