The Nrityagram Dance Ensemble
Mar 31 2011

Śriyaḥ, A decade of dance making.
At Nrityagram dance village, dance is a way of life. The founder, Protima Gauri - an exquisite Odissi dancer herself - converted ten acres of farmland into an ideal setting for the study, practice and teaching of classical dance. As knowledge passes from guru to disciple, the continuity of the classical arts is ensured. The Nrityagram Dance Ensemble is regarded as one of the foremost dance companies in India. Since 1996, the year of their life-changing New York debut, they have toured the US annually and performed in Denmark, Portugal, the Middle-east, Singapore, Japan, and more.
Śriyaḥ is a selection of works created over a decade by Artistic Director, Surupa Sen. The Sanskrit word Sriyah means from Śrī (beginning). Nrityagram's creative journey started in 2000 with the piece, Śrī in search of the Goddess. It was followed by Ansh (2004), Sacred Space (2006) and Pratima: Reflection (2008). Śriyah will include dances from each of these works. Joan Acocella of The New Yorker listed Vibhakta from Pratima: Reflection in "The 10 best dance performances of 2008".
Generous support for this performance is provided by Helen and Rajnikaut Desai
