Sounds and Rhythms of Afghanistan

Apr 23 2011 - Apr 24 2011

Sounds and Rhythms of Afghanistan

Sounds and Rhythms of Afghanistan is Homayun Sakhi, Salar Nader, Abbos Kosimov, and Humayun Khan. This extraordinary ensemble of internationally recognized musicians mix vocals with the rubab, doyra, tabla, and on special occasion, the national dance of Afghanistan, the attan.

Combining melody, rhythm, poetry, and dance, this performance takes you on an evocative journey of cross-cultural communication and exchange. Sakhi, Nader, Kosimov and Khan, deeply rooted in traditions from Central Asia, effortlessly interweave and embody their craft, evoking the wonders of this beautiful and complex region.

Sounds and Rhythms of Afghanistan has received rave reviews and standing ovations from audiences in Europe, Canada, Abu Dhabi and Dubai, and throughout the Middle East. In 2009, they performed at New York's world-renowned and prestigious Carnegie Hall. A sampling of their compositions can be heard on the album "Rainbow," a collaboration with the world famous Kronos Quartet (on the Smithsonian Folkways record label), and on "Footsteps of Babur," musical encounters from the lands of the Mughals.
