About the Workshop
What today is called "hatha yoga" in the West is a relatively recent innovation, certainly less than one hundred years old. This class will first look back a thousand years to the roots of traditional hatha yoga, and then investigate the evolution of its philosophical and practical teaching up to modern times. The foundation for this inquiry will be one of the oldest surviving hatha yoga manuals, the Hatha Yoga Pradipika (Light on Hatha Yoga), supplemented by two other frequently cited books, the Gheranda Samhita (Gheranda's Collection) and the Shiva Samhita (all three are available in recent translation from YogaVidya.com).

About the Presenter
Richard Rosen is the cofounder and current director of the Piedmont Yoga Studio in Oakland. A contributing editor to Yoga Journal, he's the author of three books: The Yoga of Breath and its sequel, Pranayama: Beyond the Fundamentals; and Yoga for 50+. He began teaching yoga in 1987.
