Drumming Through the Body with Jim Santi Owen

Oct 24 2010

undefined

From the hypnotic pulse of the shaman's drum to the intricate percussive poetry of the Indian tabla, rhythm has been used in all times and cultures as a medium to tap into and expand our awareness of self, other, and the unseen. Approached in a fully embodied way, rhythm is one of our most potent vehicles for connecting us alone and in community to spirit.

This workshop uses the sonic palette of the body, combined with bucket drumming and the percussive possibilities of the breath and voice, to reach into the ecstatic experience of community music-making. Drawing on Indian percussion, jazz, and African music, combined with Indo-Tibetan yogic traditions, Jim Santi Owen distills his more than thirty years of rhythmic training into a playful and challenging workshop accessible to everyone, from drumming neophytes to seasoned professionals.

Drumming since the age of eight, Jim Santi Owen trained in Indian percussion under Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri, T.H. Subash Chandran, and K. Sekar. Owen studied jazz with Charlie Haden, James Newton, and Tootie Heath; and African drumming and dance from the Ladzekpo Brothers. He has worked with Pharoah Sanders, Alonzo King, Hamza el Din, and Jai Uttal. Owen holds a master's degree in World Music from California Institute of the Arts. He teaches at the Ali Akbar College of Music, the Jazzschool, Dominican University, and Lines Ballet School. www.jimsantiowen.com
