A Grief Like No Other: Helping People Deal with a Violent or Sudden Death with Kathleen O'Hara
Mar 19 2011 - Mar 20 2011

This workshop has been cancelled - we apologize for any inconvenience
This workshop presents a seven-stage model to help you understand what survivors may experience after the violent or sudden death of a loved one. The losses may result from homicide, suicide, war, terrorism, or sudden death. The seven stages were developed as a result of the presenter's experience, as well as her work with hundreds of survivors. You
will learn how traumatic grief is different, including PTSD; and how to develop effective counseling skills to guide people through this experience. You will also learn how the criminal justice system impacts the victim's experience and how to assist victims with their rights, compensation, and resources available to them. This workshop is experiential as well as didactic and incorporates case histories. You will also learn how to protect yourself from secondary trauma and compassion fatigue.
Kathleen O'Hara received her graduate degree in Somatic Psychology from CIIS. Author of A Grief Like No Other, she is a survivor of a family homicide. She serves as a consultant for the federal Office for Victims of Crime, and works with Victims Services in the United Kingdom. O'Hara is a recognized expert in the field of trauma-based therapy and provides workshops to all branches of victim services. She has been interviewed by NPR, CNN, NBC, newspapers, and magazines. She has a private practice in Philadelphia counseling families who have lost loved ones to violence.
