It has been observed that as an awareness of patriarchy turns people away from patriarchally contaminated religions, seekers create for themselves more or less eclectic diets combining the many resources available in the psychospiritual market. And as a new form of spirituality thus develops, the question has arisen as to the comparative desirability of this or that combination among such resources.

Some traditional spiritual schools emphasize a single form of practice and developmental goal-such as the classical Indian yogas of devotion, knowledge and service; others, two, as in forms of Christianity that prescribe love and devotion; others, a multiplicity, as in Buddha's eightfold path.

In this talk I will propose (as Sri Aurobindo did) the desirability of an "integral yoga," in which every fundamental path is interwoven. But what are these "fundamental paths"? I will claim that the answer should not be sought in a consideration of the myriad of traditional approaches, but in the many-faceted structure of our minds. This, I expect to show, suggests the desirability of a five-fold path-which, of course, it would not be appropriate to formulate in this announcement, much as it is not appropriate to tell in advance the plot of a suspense movie.

Claudio Naranjo, MD, a pioneer of the human potential movement, studies medicine, music, and philosophy in Chile, where he was also a resident at the University of Chile Psychiatric clinic and later director of the Center for Studies in Medical Anthropology. He was among the staff in the early stages of Esalen Institute, where he became one of three successors to Fritz Perls. His life's pilgrimage has brought him to many spiritual masters. He currently educates therapists and teachers internationally on the integration of psychotherapy and spiritual traditions.
