About the Workshop
This class will follow up on previous workshops to focus on new techniques and the introduction of new exercises. These extensions of commonly used sounds and strokings will expand our playing possibilities on the bodhran, the tar, and the riq-three drums that Glen often uses in performance. On tar and bodhran, new options concerning fast pa's and snapping will be shown and developed in a systematic and gradual approach. On riq, an array of fast fingerings will be explored, as well as new left-hand or holding-hand movements that open up new rhythmic and tonal terrain on this very versatile instrument. Glen will use his Handance style of teaching in which drum language is utilized to accelerate our learning and, as always, will emphasize the communal nature of frame drumming.
About the Presenter
Glen Velez, a four-time Grammy award recipient, has played a seminal role over the last twenty-five years by introducing modern audiences to the frame drum. He has taught extensively in university and workshop settings worldwide, investigating the healing properties of drumming and sound. As a master teacher, he has developed his own teaching approach called the Handance Method, which incorporates voice and body movement into the process of learning to play the frame drum.
