Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome with Joy DeGruy

Apr 21 2011

 Part of our series
CONVERZATIONS THAT MATTER
Healing the Wounds of Intergenerational Trauma
Hosted by Belvie Rooks

Dr. DeGruy will briefly discuss the theory of Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome which suggests that centuries of slavery followed by systemic racism and oppression have resulted in multigenerational adaptive behaviors, some of which have been positive and reflective of resilience, and others that are detrimental and destructive. In brief, Dr. DeGruy will illustrate how varying levels of both clinically induced and socially learned residual stress related issues were passed along through generations as a result of slavery in an effort to promote understanding and healing .

Dr. Joy DeGruy holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications, a master's degree in Social Work (MSW), a master's degree in Psychology, and a PhD in Social Work Research. She is an Assistant Professor at Portland State University. With over twenty years of practical experience as a professional in the field of social work, she gives workshop attendees practical insight into various cultural and ethnic groups that form the basis of contemporary society. Dr. DeGruy's workshops also go far beyond the topic of cultural sensitivity; she provides specialized clinical work in areas of mental health and ecological resilience.

DeGruy authored the book Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome: America's Enduring Legacy of Injury and Healing, which addresses the residual impacts of trauma on African Descendants in the Americas. Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome lays the groundwork for understanding how the past has influenced the present, and opens up the discussion of how we can use the strengths we have gained to heal.  The book has been praised by Randall Robinson, Bill Cosby, Al Sharpton, and many more. Susan Taylor, Editorial Director of Essence Magazine says that "Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome is a master work...Her book is the balm we need to heal ourselves and our relationships. It is the gift of wholeness." Adelaide Sanford, Vice Chancellor of the Board of Regents for the State of New York states that "Dr. Joy Leary's mesmerizing, riveting book is vital reading for our time...With Dr. Leary's potent words we can and will heal."
