The Red Book of C.G. Jung: A Work of Conscience with John Beebe

Sep 25 2010

Nearly one hundred years after its inception, The Red Book of C. G. Jung was finally published last fall in a large, handsome facsimile edition with accompanying English translation. Lovingly transcribed by Jung in several calligraphic hands and illustrated with images from a new mythology, the book offers fearsome visions and transformative dreams. Mysterious, vivid paintings underline Jung's conviction that a reorientation of religious attitude is needed to overcome the reliance on heroic solutions that has too often informed the ambitious West. The inner journey undertaken in these pages is both a philosophic adventure and a striking instance of inner psychological development. It is also a work of conscience. The great depth psychologist is trying to restore an integrity he feels he has lost in the pursuit of fame as a medical doctor. What he discovers once he reconnects with his soul speaks to the humanity in all of us.

John Beebe, MD, is a psychiatrist and Jungian analyst in practice in San Francisco. After completing his training in 1978, he founded The San Francisco Jung Institute Library Journal (now Jung Journal: Culture and Psyche, published by the University of California Press). He is the author of Integrity in Depth, The Presence of the Feminine in Film, and numerous other publications.
