A Concise History of Indian Yoga and Its Westward Migration

May 29 2010

undefined

This course will explore the relationship between the various philosophies of Yoga and how they evolved over time. The first half of the course will consider the pre-Vedic origins of Yoga, the development of classical Yoga philosophies, and the re-flowering of pre-Vedic ideas in Tantrism and early Hatha Yoga. The second half will examine the modern period through the migration of Yoga to the West.

We will consider questions such as: What makes Yoga so popular today? How have Western Values and modernity in particular influenced the philosophy and practice of Yoga? Where are we today? And where do we go from here? Class time will include lecture, collaborative group work, and reflection. The course assumes a basic familiarity with some of the core philosophies of Yoga, such as the Upanishads, Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, and Tantrism.
